Hoarding

Oh Dear!!!

Lately I have been going through a lot of our stuff, evaluating what we need & use versus what has just been sitting around collecting dust. As I'm sorting, I have 3 boxes sitting beside me~I labeled them "Put Away", "Throw Away", & "Sell/Donate". We have been blessed that we have been given lots of things by other people, but when we don't use those things or need them, it becomes a burden. We don't have a very large home by today's standards, so the clutter really accumulates fast, especially since there are a few of us! Also, something to consider, for you & me, is when we hold on to something we don't need, we are keeping someone else from having it who could really use it. Now of course, as you go through your things & get rid of unneeded items, you don't have to sell what you are getting rid of, you can just donate it. However, we are in a place that we can really use some extra money, and my husband would like me to get some money out of all the things we are getting rid of. If you do decide to do this, you can try listing your items on eBay, or on Craigslist for free. I will attempt to sell most of our things on eBay, for very low prices. Most of my auctions I will start at $0.99, that way it does not cost much to sell. If something does not sell, it is no big deal; I will just place it in a bag for donation. Every couple of months or so, we will receive notice in the mail that an organization will be coming around for donations of household items. When this happens, I will just place our items curbside, & they are picked up for me! I really like to be at home as much as possible & don't like much running around. If you don't have this in your area, you can place your donation bag in your vehicle so that the next trip out you (or someone else) can just drop it off at your closest donation center.

You will feel so much better without a lot of clutter! And you will be blessing someone else with the things you don't need.

  2. Like your post about getting rid of stuff. I have spent the last 20months sorting through my parents things in their home of 50 plus years. It has been quite a journey. A friend suggested I start a blog. It is called "Treasures In My Attic" It has helped me to journal some of my experience at age 57 yrs., coming back to my childhoood home and dealing with my parents "stuff". Keep it up! It pays now and in the not so distant future of your family.

  4. Yes, Renee. I wrote this one about a year ago and unfortunately with all of eBay's changes, I don't have much success with making any money now. I don't know if it's worth the time any more, even though we *really* need the money now. EBay used to be fun.

  5. Thanks for the inspiration! I am constantly trying to simplify our home and belongings. We are also in the position of needing money in a serious way, and we've been selling as much as possible. There is freedom in simplicity! Thanks for sharing. :)

  7. I agree with you both, Jasmine and Joy. A cluttered house makes my mind cluttered.

  8. Thanks for posting this.

I am a hoarder, and my husband is also (sort of hereditary in his case, so we also end up with items from his family that they have no place to store but we "CAN NOT" get rid of). I was forced to really face up to this before my son was born, and got rid of the worst of it, but still have a long way to go (I also quit my job at that time to be a full-time mother, and lost my excuse of being too busy with work to keep house properly).

The funny thing is the post before this in my blog reader was about wasting time and not having a daily plan. Looks like I'll be taking time in the near future to do more de-cluttering, and hopefully sell some things for extra money as well.

  9. Great post. I've been watching a show on Netflix about hoarding. Each episode they go into 2 different homes and tell their story and then offer to help clean up. Makes me think twice.

About Ebay..I dabble in it. Right now you can list up to 100 auction style listings free thru January. So, you can start it at higher then .99 if you want and it won't cost you a thing.

I've got a blog going about some of the things I sell. www.momspaycheck.blogspot.com
