Listening to Hymns

Two Dutch Children Share a Hymn Book in a Church on a Sunday
Two Dutch Children Share a Hymn Book in a Church on a Sunday

I guess I am "old-fashioned", but I like hymns.  For a long time I have been trying to find somewhere to listen to some online since we really don't have any CD's of hymns.  I have only found short samples or only instrumental pieces, when I would like to hear the beautiful words that speak of the Saviour.

I want to expose our children to this good music:  music that focuses on the truths of God's Word.  I am thankful to have finally found something and wanted to share it with you.  I have found a whole playlist of videos of Christian hymns you can listen to.   It is on YouTube, and if you sit down to watch instead of just listening, there are beautiful pictures of God's creation to go along with the videos, as well as the words.  Since it is a playlist, the songs will keep playing until you stop them!

I have been playing these for many hours of the day so the children and I can enjoy their beauty and pleasant melodies.  The children have told me that the hymns help them to sleep at night and comfort them.

I hope you enjoy them too.

  1. Emily,

I too love Hymns! I grew up in a Mormon and they sang old hymns. Many of them are Christian hymns. I got a Christian hymnbook for Christmas and I went through all the pages and I only know maybe 20% of the songs. I decided to go to cyberhymnal and try to learn the songs that way because I don't know how to read music. I do have a couple CD's of old hymns and they are available but we just don't always have the money. I am so glad you found this on youtube! I will go and check it out! :)

    Love,

    Rosemi

  3. I love hymns and they give me so much comfort. I don't like modern hymns very much and tend to stick with the old fashion ones. One of my fondest memories of my childhood is singing hymns on Sunday evenings followed by Bible reading. We sang from the Little Flock Hymnbook (as we were Brethren) that is full of very old hymns. Even if you don't know the tune, these are lovely just to read.

    1. I don't like the modern hymns really either. Thanks for the link--that is quite a list of hymns, and you're right, the words are lovely.

  4. Thank you for sharing the playlist. We just recently (in the last 6 months) started attending a church that sings hymns. At first I was very unsure I would like it as we were used to comtemporary music but I LOVE the hymns. I am working on memorizing a few favorites and I find the kids humming or whistling them too. They are so rich and they stay with you throughout the day.

    1. Thank you, but what do you type in to get a good "station"? When I tried hymns, they were just modern renditions...I prefer something more traditional.
