Femininity

“Why do women want to dress like men when they’re fortunate enough to be women? Why lose femininity, which is one of our greatest charms? We get more accomplished by being charming than we would be flaunting around in pants and smoking. I’m very fond of men. I think they are wonderful creatures. I love them dearly. But I don’t want to look like one. When women gave up their long skirts, they made a grave error.”

Respectable Women

"Thank you" to all the Christian young ladies who respect themselves enough to not wear clothing that looks like their underwear when they swim, as though a change of environment makes it acceptable. And thank you for not posting pictures of yourself in said underwear-like clothing. (You would freak out if a guy took pictures of you in your underwear.)

Women's Responsibility to Dress Modestly

Yesterday we looked at how adultery begins in the heart.  This is most certainly true, for both men and women, and if you have not yet read that post, I encourage you to do so.  But we Christian women have a GREAT responsibility in how we dress, so as to not try to stir up the lusts of men.  We cannot dress in immodest clothing and then state that it is not our fault if men look with lust.  Of course it is our fault if we do this!  We don't control what the men do, but we certainly have a responsibility to dress in a way that is not drawing attention to ourselves and revealing things that should be kept private.

And to the ladies who say that their husbands want them to dress in a provocative way, let me be forthright with you:  It does not matter!  If your husband wants you to dress this way outside of the privacy of your own bedroom, then he is in sin, and will have to be dealt with by the Lord in this area--hopefully sooner, rather than later.  But it must be said, our husbands can never give us commands where the Lord God has already given us a command, and He has commanded us to be modest in our apparel.  We must obey God rather than man, and you must respectfully decline if your husband asks you to dress in this way, either out in public or even at home in front of your children.

Now, we will turn again today to a straightforward quote from A.W. Pink to give us some much needed direction in this area:

By clear and necessary implication, Christ here also forbade the using of any other of our senses and members to stir up lust.  If ensnaring looks be reprehensible, then so much more unclean conversation and wanton dalliances, which are the fuel of this hellish desire.  Again, if lustful looking be so grievous a sin, then those who dress and expose themselves with desires to be looked at and lusted after--as Jezebel, who painted her face, tired her head, and looked out of the window (II Kings ix, 30)--are not less, but even more guilty.  In this matter it is only too often the case that men sin, but women tempt them so to do.  How great then, must be the guilt of the great majority of the modern misses who deliberately seek to arouse the sexual passions of our young men.  And how much greater still is the guilt of most of their mothers for allowing them to become lascivious temptresses.
~A.W. Pink, from Sermon on the Mount

I must also add, in case you are wondering, that indeed men also have an obligation to dress modestly. So if you are raising boys, please do teach them this as well.

Time to Buy Skirts

Hello Ladies at Home,

Have you been looking for modest skirts in the stores but have been unable to find them?  I know how difficult that can be!  Many of the skirts in-store are too short or too tight.

One of Blessed Homemaking's sponsors, New Creation Apparel has shared that several of their most desired skirts are now re-stocked.

Also, other favorite skirts will be re-made for summer, and new and popular designs will be posted shortly!

Be sure to check out their "close-out" items for exceptional value while they last!
New Creation Apparel also has several styles of maternity skirts which are so comfortable that customers who are not pregnant, enjoy wearing them.

I am very thankful for companies like New Creation Apparel that make dressing modestly and femininely a reality in our modern times.  They are a wonderful company with quality and affordable apparel.

Purity and the Christian

As Christians, we must have a high standard of purity.  We must be pure in our speech, pure in our dress, pure in our relationships.  All of this stems from a heart desire to please the Lord and become more like Him--He Who is completely holy and without blemish.  We must not let anyone dissuade us from living a life of purity.  This is why it is so important to be careful what company we keep, not only with friends, but also what books we are reading, what we watch on TV, and what we read and look at on the internet.  Impurity and immorality is all around us.  We must be careful to guard our hearts and minds from what would draw us away from the Lord Jesus Christ.

Sexual immorality is a huge problem in our culture, even among those who profess Christ.  Single Christians must be careful to live in chastity and live a sexually pure life.  Singles must remember that the only legitimate outlet for urges and feelings of this sort is marriage.  The Scriptures state, "It is better to marry than to burn" (1 Corinthians 7:9).  Scriptures do not state, "it is better to give in in a 'committed relationship'" or "it is better to indulge one's feelings" by committing what some would term "self-love".  I could use another word, but I won't here.  If you don't know what I mean, send me a message.  I would say that most people are not gifted with singleness.  I believe the Lord created most of us to be in a marriage relationship.  You probably know who you are.  I would urge you singles, while you are awaiting the Lord's perfect timing to bring you a spouse, that you keep busy in serving your families and also busy about the Lord's work in ministry.  There are always people who need help, and there are always people who need the Gospel.  Just don't completely neglect your family at home (they probably need your help too), to go and serve others.  Be busy about the Lord's work.  And use your time of singleness to grow closer to the Lord.

Married Christians must also keep a high standard of purity.  Sometimes when people get married, they let go of previous convictions in favor of new experiences, forgetting the former boundaries that kept them on the straight and narrow.  Purity is still very important in marriage.  The marriage bed must be kept pure and undefiled.  Only pure things should take place there, and we also must be careful to guard our relationships with our husbands (and of course, husbands should do the same for their wives.)  It is probably unwise for men and women (who are not husband and wife), to ever be alone together, or to have close friendships with one another.  We must observe that most adulterous relationships began with two people who never initially had that intention.  Keeping some boundaries is wise and helps preserve the sanctity of marriage, and also avoids the appearance of evil (1 Thessalonians 5:22).

I will leave you with Matthew Henry's commentary on Hebrews 13:4:
To purity and chastity, Heb_13:4. Here you have, 1. A recommendation of God's ordinance of marriage, that it is honourable in all, and ought to be so esteemed by all, and not denied to those to whom God has not denied it. It is honourable, for God instituted it for man in paradise, knowing it was not good for him to be alone. He married and blessed the first couple, the first parents of mankind, to direct all to look unto God in that great concern, and to marry in the Lord. Christ honoured marriage with his presence and first miracle. It is honourable as a means to prevent impurity and a defiled bed. It is honourable and happy, when persons come together pure and chaste, and preserve the marriage bed undefiled, not only from unlawful but inordinate affections. 2. A dreadful but just censure of impurity and lewdness: Whoremongers and adulterers God will judge. (1.) God knows who are guilty of such sins, no darkness can hide them from him. (2.) He will call such sins by their proper names, not by the names of love and gallantry, but of whoredom and adultery, whoredom in the single state and adultery in the married state. (3.) He will bring them into judgment, he will judge them, either by their own consciences here, and set their sins in order before them for their deep humiliation (and conscience, when awakened, will be very severe upon such sinners), or he will set them at his tribunal at death, and in the last day; he will convict them, condemn them, and cast them out for ever, if they die under the guilt of this sin.
I also want to encourage you, if you have been involved in some impurity in the past, that the Lord is willing and able to forgive your sins.  There is no sin too great for the blood of Jesus to cover.  If you are guilty of some sin of impurity, repent and turn away from your sin.  Turn to the Lord for His forgiveness and cleansing.  He can give you new life in Christ.

What Will You Wear to the Beach or Pool?

May God bless all of those ladies, young or old, who will SWIM this summer and do so modestly,...
and who will facilitate your daughters doing similarly.
May God bless the work of your hands as you endure the frustration of going store-by-store, site-by-site, seamstress-by-seamstress --
almost ready to give up! --
but pressing on in a desire to honor your God,
your husbands -- perhaps current, perhaps future --,
and/or the eyes of others' husbands and sons who will bear witness to your time in the water.

There are a number of us who notice your Godly character, as reflected in your swimming attire.
We not only appreciate your example to our daughters,...
but we also appreciate that our husbands and sons will not be put in the awkward position of perhaps needing to look at the birds in the sky or flat-out LEAVE the swimming area that they had hoped to enjoy.
There is nothing more fun than time in the sun without the unnecessary awkwardness of nudity or partial nudity all around.
And there is nothing more lovely than seeing modest women and girls fulfilling the positive duties of "thou shall not commit adultery" and "flee fornication" in their shopping leading up to and during the summer pool season.
~K. Harrhof
The below video has some interesting information on the history of how bikinis came about, and what women used to wear to go swimming.  She also presents information about how immodestly dressed women affect the male brain.  Our culture has truly lost their sense of shame and decency in this area.  Women wearing the current popular beach attire should be embarrassed by it!  Please, as the summer months approach, think about what you are wearing (and your daughters).  Think about how it affects the people around you.  No one wants to see all your flesh hanging out, or at least no one should be.   Note:  the nice lady presenting the information has her own swimwear line, but I do not recommend them as they really don't cover enough.

Also, someone has recommended Christian Modesty and the Public Undressing of America.  I've heard it mentioned before, but now I've moved it up on my to-read list.

We Must Preserve Purity

Many of our churches today do nothing about immodesty.  Jesus did not die in agony upon Calvary's cross to dress his beloved bride like a harlot.  He did not.  His enemies stripped him in public to shame him.

Professing Christian women today expose themselves voluntarily, without shame, in skimpy clothing, short skirts, swimwear, low cut tops, obscenely tight clothing and pants.

Yet, the word of God, which is sufficient for all things in life, plainly commands women to adorn themselves in modest apparel because you're the bride of Christ ~ in modest apparel, with shamefacedness, sobriety and self control.  Our Savior clothes His bride in righteousness, good works and heart felt modesty.  He gives her a heart for purity, not sinful sensuality.

Godly older women can advise young women regarding sexual purity in a way far more appropriate than men can, and by doing this, older women actually help guard and maintain purity in Christ's congregation, and their homes.  She is like a wall that helps preserve purity in the body of Christ.

This is from Part 2 of The Sufficiency of Scripture for Women's Ministry:  https://ncfic.org/events/view/sufficiency-of-scripture-2009

This is not a nice idea, some illusion, or something unattainable for the Christian woman.  This is something we must stand for, require of our daughters growing up, and not falter on under pressure. We are to show forth the purity of the Bride of Christ, and we can not do this while exposing our bodies inappropriately.  Some have strayed.  We must return to exhibiting purity in this dark world.  We are strangers passing through and must be mindful of our heavenly home.  Ladies, we must be a light for Christ in how we dress.

A Great Responsibility for Women

Dear Christian Ladies,

It has sadly become the trend, even among many professing Christian women, to see how far we can push the boundaries when it comes to our clothing.  Join me at Raising Homemakers today, where we will consider our responsibility in what we wear.

New Fall Skirt Arrivals from New Creation Apparel

What a joy and a privilege to dress like a feminine woman!  It's so nice to be able to dress differently than men, don't you think?  Even if you only dress up on the Lord's Day or special occasions, don't you feel differently when you do?  Dressing femininely is a part of encouraging men to act like gentlemen, to treat you like a lady.  But of course this must be accompanied by a feminine manner as well.

Well, I do think it's always nice to get a new skirt for the wardrobe.  Now is a great time to get a new skirt, or two, because New Creation Apparel currently has new skirts in stock for Fall.  If you've never heard of New Creation Apparel, they are a great company, with wonderful customer service, that has a really beautiful selection of modest skirts at affordable prices.  They even have lovely maternity skirts!  They are also one of Blessed Homemaking's advertisers, so please support them!

I will show you some of their new arrivals.  Which one is your favorite?  I really like the Double Cascading Ruffle and the Margot.

Modest Fashion for the Homemaker

I love beautiful and feminine clothing, don't you?  The great thing is these days, it doesn't have to be uncomfortable.  I especially love the sweater above with the lace sleeves.  Which one is your favorite?  These beautiful, feminine tops are on sale right now.  The link below will take you to them!  You might want to hurry, because the stock of on sale clothing does not last forever.  I have often tried to buy something, but it was sold out!
Was $49.99 - Now $16.99 - Stylish Knit Tops & Sweaters | 26 Styles!

Above are some pretty cardigans to help you prepare for Spring!  I can't believe Spring is already right around the corner.   You can purchase them at this link:
Was $29.99 - Now $11.99 - Lightweight Long Cardigans | New Spring Colors

Don't forget to pair your pretty tops with a lovely skirt from New Creation Apparel!  They still have lovely skirts at affordable prices, even for pregnant mamas.

Some of my children have a cold right now.  Thankfully they are getting better.  I am so blessed to be their mother.  We need to think of that every day when we wake up (and when we have difficulties with them): My children are a blessing from the Lord.  And really, they are His children that He has entrusted to us.

Western Morality

Woman Reading

I see some women dressed in veils go by,
And next to them, some women barely dressed.
I contemplate this contrast, and ask why,
Our western girls are eager to divest.

Yet once our ladies were much better dressed,
They wore fine hats and clothes from head to toe.
They went to church decked in their Sunday best;
They walked with grace wherever they would go.

Those ladies knew their place and had respect,
For gentlemen and everyone around.
The men in turn, did honour and protect,
Those ladies, whose good name was safe and sound.

Detail of Dancing Couple from Le Bal a Bougival

What happened to this modesty and grace,
That ladies used to have in years gone by?
What evil has so cursed the human race,
That such fine female modesty should die?

The devil offered Woman that old fruit,
Of knowledge and of freedom and of power.
And since the sixties this has been the root,
Of decadence, the loss of Woman’s flower.

And just like Adam, Man must share the blame,
For he stood by inactive, when the flow,
Of sexual immorality became,
As filthy and as strong as we now know.

And some men, full of lust, to their delight,
Abuse the girls who think that they are free,
Who think that being equal is their right,
But equal to the worst that men can be.

Seated Woman with Bent Knee

Now chivalry and modesty are spurned,
As women prize equality and force;
And many noble gentlemen are burned,
As they encounter women tough and coarse.

I know that not all women are like this;
There are still modest ladies on this earth,
Who've never listened to the serpent’s hiss,
Who know their source of grace and inner worth.

Lighthouse Walk at Biarritz, c.1906

For God the loving Father made us pure,
All men and women special, not the same;
In His eyes, we are equal, to be sure.
Our holy lives will glorify His name.

Good Christian men and women, listen up!
Fulfill the role that God has given you.
And if you do, we shall all drink the cup,
Of love and joy and harmony anew.

Stylish and Modest Skirts

The Parasol
As Christian women, it is important to dress in modest apparel.  I also like to wear skirts to be feminine and distinguish myself from men.  If you don't usually wear skirts or a dress, maybe you should try it and see how men treat you more like a lady.  Now, many men today are clueless about chivalry, but, we can help bring that back by dressing and acting femininely and reminding them that yes, indeed, we are ladies!

If you've been searching and searching and searching for some modest skirts that are still stylish and beautiful, I have good news for you!  I know how hard it is to find something decent at the stores because I have looked!  One of my favorite places to buy skirts is New Creation Apparel because:
  1. They have only skirts that are modest and to fit every taste.
  2. They are a Christian company.
  3. Sigrid, the owner, is so sweet and a delight to do business with.
  4. They ship very promptly.
  5. I have never been disappointed in the quality of their skirts.
  6. The prices are affordable, and are actually some of the best I've seen for new, modest skirts.
  7. The do have a large selection of clearance items with even lower prices.
  8. They have the best maternity skirts!
New Creation Apparel just recently got a shipment in of new skirt styles and also restocked some of their other skirts.  It is best to shop there at these times so you can find the size you need.  Here are some of the new skirts that have arrived:

Pleated Panel Khaki

Cairo Denim
Two Pleats Black

I hope this helps you find some modest, beautiful skirts!  I really do love this company, and that is why they advertise here on Blessed Homemaking.  Happy shopping!

The Truth About Tattoos and Piercings

Are tattoos and multiple piercings for the Christian?  Is there a specific Bible passage that forbids these practices?  This video is very informative and helpful with this subject as it pertains to Christians.
