Choose Christ, not Curriculum for your Homeschool + Giveaway!!!

Over our long and continuous homeschool journey (over 18 years!), we have used many different curricula and types of curricula--workbooks, textbooks, and a mixture of Charlotte Mason/classical/ and unit studies.  Last year, I had been reading more about Charlotte Mason's method of education and found so much that resonated with me--including nature study, art instruction, music, narrations...And so I set out to make last year our first purely Charlotte Mason year.  I purchased membership for one of these Charlotte Mason curriculums and hurried on to purchase all of the books and supplies we would need for almost the entire year.  Then the books started coming in, and I started prereading.  "Huh.  I don't agree with that," I thought.  There were things I was finding that didn't line up with the Bible.  I contacted the company with my concerns.  Well, just discuss them with your children, I was told.  But these books were teaching something blatantly opposed to God's Word--evolution, for one.

After some time, I decided I would need to choose something else for our family, and I did so.  Curriculum try number two:  ordered all the books and supplies again.  Books came in,  and I started reading.   Hmmm...more things contrary to God's Word.  A majority of these books seemed to have a "woke" flavor, plus some other issues.  But these were "Christian" companies...again I contacted the company with my concerns, but they didn't share mine.  I just couldn't use such material to teach my children, and so I ordered something else.  This curriculum seemed a bit better.  There was no blatant evolution, and the book selections seemed a bit more conservative.  We used this for awhile, but they were really only learning about God in the short Bible readings we had every morning.  Everything else was secular, without any mention of the Creator and Lord of the Universe.  I decided to add in some books from another Charlotte Mason company to give my children more to read, to see if that would help.  But it ended up being too much, and again, there were issues with content I was not comfortable with.  For example, if you do purely Charlotte Mason, you are supposed to have your children read mythology.  My youngest at the time who I was homeschooling, kept asking me, "Mom, why are we reading these weird stories?  I don't like them--they're ridiculous!"  I really agreed with her, but, we were "supposed to" read mythology because somehow it was going to benefit her.  But would it benefit her spiritually?

After doing a lot of research, I switched most things over to a more conservative Charlotte Mason company, which worked fine for history because we were in the same time period.  The book selections were a bit better, without as much questionable material.  But there was still plenty, without any warnings!  We also tried a Shakespeare play, because if you are doing Charlotte Mason, you are supposed to learn Shakespeare!  Even though I chose a milder play, there were still blasphemies and other course talk and situations in it, which I tried to explain to my children.  But most them told me afterwards that they did not like going through that play and didn't think a Christian man would write such things.  I also fully expected with this company that there would be more mention of the Lord along with our history readings, and a pointing out of His working in the world.  But there was next to nothing of this.  I started thinking upon all of this more seriously and hearkening back to our main purpose in homeschooling our children and why I started in the first place...

It dawned on me that while I was homeschooling my children, they were receiving much of a type of education that they'd get in a public school setting--not receiving a Christian worldview or God-honoring material in their books.  Their "peers" in these books were not a good example to them.  They were not learning that God made the world and everything in it.  They were not being stirred on to holy living.  I knew we had to change something, and it all weighed heavily on me while I purused through curriculm for the upcoming school year.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Why are you homeschooling, or if you haven't started yet, why are you interested in it?  Is it because you want your children to have a better chance academically?  Do you want your children to not be stuck in a classroom?  Do you want to have more time with them?  Do you want to have more control over what they are learning?  Perhaps you've learned about a certain method of education and want your children to be taught that way.  Maybe you want to make school "fun".  Or, maybe you want to keep your children away from peer pressure.
While none of these reasons are wrong, and some of them are very good and may be helpful for your children, the above reasons may not be enough to keep you going through the years when difficulties arise and you have challenging days.  I think there is one overarching reason that we Christian parents should homeschool our children and that we must keep at the forefront of our minds.  In all of our plans and curriculum choosing, this should be the most important aspect.  What is this "Reason for Homeschooling"?
The reason is to bring our children up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.  To show them, in all subjects, and in all ways, the Lord is King and the Creator of all.  That this is His world, and He has been working in it since the beginning of time.  We must also show them that we are not living for ourselves and our pleasure, but for the One Who made us and all things.  We must help them in all their studies to learn about the Lord and their place in His world.
So, I believe we cannot just follow a curriculum, but we need to be actively involved in each step in knowing what our children are learning, and if it is something beneficial to them spiritually.  We must not fully embrace a curriculum, but embrace Christ!  Of course, there are some good Christian curriculum companies out there, but it seems they are getting harder to find.  And I always recommend prereading your children's books, especially if they will be reading them on their own.
If you'd like me to write more on this subject, please let me know in the comments.
But now, on to the fun part for you...
Expectant Parents – New Resource from Focus on the Family {And, iPad Mini Giveaway!}
Expectant Parents is a new book from Focus on the Family that was written by Suzanne Hadley Gosselin.  It is designed to help both husbands and wives be prepared for the birth of a new child (mostly for first time parents).   Keep reading to find out how you can enter the giveaway.
This new book includes 12 chapters with eight helpful appendices.  The chapters cover many helpful topics to help couples prepare for their new bundle of joy, such as doing special things as a couple that you won't be able to do so easily after having children, keeping your relationship strong once you become parents, keeping communication open between husband and wife, and taking into consideration what your spouse is going through on the journey to parenthood.  It even covers topics such as hormones, cravings, and weight gain; emotions and pregnancy fears; preparing for the delivery; the first few weeks of being new parents, and much more.
Things I liked:
The author asks many probing questions to get husbands and wives thinking about the decisions they will have to make in the coming months, like who will be allowed in the delivery room?  Suzanne Hadley Gosselin gives a lot of great tips on preparing to become parents.  It is nice to have a Christian resource for this information.  Suzanne goes even goes into the emotional and spiritual side of preparing for a new baby.  There are questions for the couple to discuss at the end of each chapter that really get you thinking and planning.  There is advice for both mothers- and fathers-to-be.  Even if only one spouse was able to read this, I believe it would be helpful as long as the other spouse was involved and cooperative with planning, preparing, and discussion.
Things I did not like:
Suzanne Hadley Gosselin does not hold to the scripture of women being keepers at home.  She devotes an entire chapter to "Planning Post-Baby Career Decisions".  She states that it is up to each couple to decide who should stay home with the baby, either the husband or wife, or even hire a babysitter.  This does not fit with Titus 2:5, 1 Timothy 5:14, or other areas of Scripture where Christian women are admonished to guard and guide the home, and keep it, nor does it fit in with the Scriptural mandate for husbands to be the breadwinners of the family.  If you can overlook this area, you may find this book very helpful when preparing for a new child.
While many books for new parents focus on prenatal development and the health of a mom-to-be, Suzanne Hadley Gosselin's Expectant Parents ' core purpose is to help new parents understand key issues related to the arrival of a new child in the home, offering practical assistance as they prepare themselves for long-term family success.
About the book:
Many books focus on prenatal development and the health of a mom-to-be. While Expectant Parents  does touch on important issues of pregnancy, its core purpose is help expectant parents understand key issues related to the arrival of a new child in the home, offering practical assistance as they prepare themselves for long-term family success.
It's often said that babies don't come with an instruction manual. This book actually provides parents with information and practical steps for writing their own---as they work to create the kind of home and family they choose to build. This includes strengthening their own marriage relationship, setting plans and expectations for parenthood, increasing communication, and preparing for the new stage of their family life that is just ahead. Ideal for first-time parents, this book would also be helpful for couples wanting to explore and prepare for the emotional, physical, and spiritual life changes that come with the arrival of any new child into the family.
For You: Royal Berkey Water Filter Giveaway!
My guess is that you are blessed with access to clean running water. We don't really worry about getting parasites or other waterborne diseases when we turn on our tap. But while we are blessed with clean water coming through indoor plumbing, are you aware of some of the environmental contaminants that are frequently found in that water? Traces of heavy metals like mercury and aluminum, pesticide residues, and volatile organic compounds can be found in our drinking water!
  Berkey Giveaway Banner from Positively Real Media
This is why the bloggers of Positively Real Media are so excited to be teaming up to bring to you a Royal Berky 3.25 Gallon Stainless Steel Water Purifier giveaway sponsored by United Environmental Solutions!
About The Berkey
Berkey water purifiers are truly unique water purifying systems. According to UES, they are able to remove red food coloring from water while still allowing beneficial minerals to remain! As free-standing units that put the power of gravity to use, the Berkey systems don't use any electricity. This makes them excellent systems to have on hand while camping or during power outages.
  Positively Real Media is giving away a Royal Berkey
While whole house filtration systems can be fantastic solutions to the problem of residual water contamination, they are simply out of the budget for most families. However, a Berkey system is a fraction of the cost and can filter 4 gallons of water per hour, making it a great fit for families! If you want to ensure that your family's drinking and cooking water is as clean and pure as it can be, a Berkey may be just what you need!
Win A 3.25 Gallon Royal Berkey!
The bloggers of Positively Real Media, a network of naturally-minded Christian bloggers, are thrilled to be able to offer one of our readers a 3.25 Gallon Royal Berkey Stainless Steel Water Purifier, valued at $300! Many thanks to United Environmental Solutions for providing this fanatic prize to one blessed reader. Mother's Book of Home Economics~Review & Giveaway!
As a homemaker in our modern age, I am always looking for encouragement in my role of being a keeper at home.  It is not always easy to come by.  We are discouraged and sometimes even frowned upon for staying home to take care of children and husband.  Or we are asked why we don't do more outside of the home.  That's why I'm so excited to share with you a wonderful resource today that I know you'll love--Mother's Book of Home Economics: Remembrances, Letters, and Essays from a New England Housewife (please keep reading to find out how you can win your very own copy!).  This is another excellent book from my beloved friend and blogger, Mrs. Sharon White.  In case you don't know, she is the authoress of The Legacy of Home blog, as well as quite a few other books now.  You can see another review I did of her book, For The Love of Christian Homemaking  here.
Mother's Book of Home Economics is yet another gem from Mrs. White.  This one has 312 pages and 121 short chapters on Child Care, Cleaning, Etiquette, Finances, Holiness, Homemaking, Hospitality, Kitchen, and Marriage.  It is very easy to sit down to a short chapter and glean some encouragement for your day, or to get involved in reading chapter after chapter (if you have the time).  It is such an interesting book, as it contains stories and lessons from Mrs. White's own life.  There is also a helpful index in the back of the book.  It is not really a "how-to" book, though you will find lots of helpful information in the chapters on the previously mentioned subjects.  It is a book I am proud to have on my bookshelf and encourage my daughters to read.  Mrs. White knows the value of a homemaker and also shares the wisdom of homemakers of old.  We are losing that wisdom, and we need to not lose it but pass it on to the next generation.
From the back of the book:
"There are many Home Economics books that will teach you important facts, such as how to get out a stain; how to clean your oven; or how to read food labels.  This is all valuable information.  We should certainly have those kinds of books in our homes.  Nonetheless, did you ever just want to enter someone's home and observe how it all works in daily life?  Did you ever want to learn about how a family used to keep house, or how it is working today?
...The writings are designed to encourage the Christian housewife.  You will feel supported in your decision to stay home and care for your family.  You will also notice a gentle nudging to live the old paths, and find peace there."
Homemaker Reads a Recipe Book
I am so thankful for Mrs. White and her encouraging writings.  In a world where we are bombarded with pressure to leave the home, send our children out of it often and prematurely, and take up work other than homemaking, Mrs. White is a light shining in the darkness.  She encourages us to cook homemade meals, gather the whole family to the table, listen to good sermons as we do our work, have Bible and prayer time, keep a clean and orderly home, and basically be a light to our families.  I do wish she could start blogging again, but for now we have her blog archives and her books. I hope if you don't win Mother's Book of Home Economics that you will buy it.  You will be so encouraged!
Mrs. Sharon White has generously offered to give a copy of her book Mother's Book of Home Economics to one Blessed Homemaking reader.  To enter to win, please use the below form.  You do not have to use every entry type, but you may use more to gain more entries for the giveaway!  FYI, Art for the King is my Etsy Shop--I'd appreciate the favorites ♥
A Video You Will WANT Your Children to Watch!
http://transactions.sendowl.com/stores/3025/5378
I am not big on letting my children watch videos.  I am picky about what I allow them to watch.  A big reason for this is that I know they will repeat what they've heard (and sometimes seen), and they'll replay it in their heads, over and over.  There are not a whole lot of decent videos out there, in my opinion.  I also don't like them sitting around mindlessly tuned out to something on the screen.
BUT...I have found an exception.  I have found a video I will let my children watch over and over!  (Read through this post to see how you can win your very own copy of this video!)
This video is the latest DVD from Moore Family Films--ABC Say It With Me.  I really, really enjoyed this video, and I was so glad that the Moores sent it to me to review.  My children, even though I limit their video-watching time, still like to request to watch a video more often than I'd like.  And boy, were they thrilled when I told them I had a new video from The Moores to watch.  They excitedly sat down in front of the TV to watch ABC Say It With Me.
This video is a blessing.  We see the Moore family again, with all of their sweet children.  This video will help your children to memorize Scripture--what an important thing to have our children do!  Psalm 119:11 says, “Thy Word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against Thee.” As parents, it’s important to teach our children both to memorize God’s Word and to be “doers” of the Word by obeying it.
In this film, a KJV verse is taught for each letter of the Bible. The verse is repeated several times while a scene is shown that illustrates something related to the Bible verse to be memorized, while children are reminded to "Say it with me". The illustrative scene helps to teach good character to your children. For example, the "C" memory verse is "Children obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Ephesians 6:1" We see a group of children outside playing a game. The mama calls them in to eat, and instead of complaining and whining to stay out longer, the children get up to go inside, while we hear a cheerful reminder to obey quickly.
Some other examples from the video are:
In “B” a brother remembers to be kind by sharing with his little sister.
In “D” children are encouraged to pick up their toys without complaining.
In “H” children honor their parents through loving acts of thoughtfulness.
In “T” a 13 year-old brother takes time to read the Bible to his younger siblings.
In "Y" a young lady and her family are the "light of the world" to a harried restaurant waiter!
This video is not loud or obnoxious--it has pleasant music and sound affects, and farm animals!  (You can't go wrong with that!)  I enjoy watching it with my children, and it even helps me to memorize Scripture!  Would you rather have your children repeating some nonsense or not-so-good stuff, or repeating Scripture? I know what I prefer!  And I think it will bless the Lord to hear our little ones going around reciting His Word.
So, this video is on my, "Yes, you can watch that!" list.  It is on the top!  It helps them to hide God's Word in their hearts in a cheerful, upbeat way and gives them good examples of loving one another and also shows pleasant family life.
