What Saith the Scriptures?

Are we ever guilty of saying the Word of God does not speak on a subject when it actually does?  I have heard this several times:  The Scriptures do not speak on this matter.  But in reality, they do.  Does the Lord not give us instructions on important life matters?

I submit to you that He does.  However, some times we are unwilling to listen.  We may even have something pointed out to us--specific Scriptures to address our situation, maybe even church history to show what beliefs have been passed down through time.  But are we willing to listen to the Lord's counsel, or His commands?  We must not be stubborn and unwilling to listen to the very Word of God.

If we are ignorant on a subject, should we not search the Scriptures and ask the Lord for wisdom?  (James 1:5)  Or would we rather have the wisdom of men instead?  This wisdom is not comparable to the Lord's perfect wisdom!  (1 Corinthians 2:5-6, 1 Corinthians 3:19)

Or perhaps we have a lack of faith, or unbelief.  If we have been shown what Scripture says on a particular matter, yet we do not follow the Lord because of fear, this is surely a lack of faith!  We must pray: Lord increase my faith (Luke 17:5).  Then we must trust in the Lord as we walk in steps of obedience.

Perhaps we see what everyone else around us is doing--the world--or even, perhaps, our fellow believers.  We see that they are going one way, and we are tempted to follow because it's the easiest way.  However, when we know what is right to do because we've read it in the Word, we need to do it.  The Lord has not called us to a life of ease or comfort, though He does bless and care for His children.  We must know that we need to follow Him regardless of what everyone else is doing or failing to do.

And we must follow the Lord with humbleness of mind, with a holy fear and awe of His greatness.  We must not walk in pride, but in humility, remembering that it is the Lord Who has purchased us with His very blood.

Following the Lord may not always be easy, but easy should not be our goal.  We must have our eyes on Jesus, trusting in Him as we follow His will for us, even when others around us are doing something else and do not understand.

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. (Proverbs 3:5)

  1. I appreciate this post - thank you. Recently, the Lord has shown up some error in our family's ways (certain celebrations that perhaps are not lined up with Scripture) and it has been a tough journey as we attempt to walk away from the world in a quicker pace. I have to admit, it is more challenging that I thought it would, since the children question and wonder, which makes me re-think decisions and pray even more earnestly. Thank you for your encouraging words.

    1. You're very welcome. I also want to add that we must not heap burdens onto people like the Pharisees did, and also, with no change in their hearts. Whatever decisions we make for our families, they must be done with much prayer and Scripture-searching, and remembering that God gives us grace, while He sees what is in our hearts. We must also be gentle with our children and explain things on their level of understanding, with our desire to always please the Lord. Blessings ♥
