"...scientists found that 3 minutes after contaminating a wooden cutting board, 99.9% of the pathogenic bacteria had died, while none of the bacteria died on plastic."

I have a plastic one which I hate! It stained very quickly and I think the wood holds up much better.
ReplyDeleteI've been using a plastic one for a while, and have noticed even if I scrub it or run it thru the dishwasher, it still doesn't look, *clean*. This is an even bigger push for me to get a new wooden one. Hopefully I can find a cheap one to do til I can buy a really nice one. They can be really expensive.
ReplyDeleteYes, I have noticed that they do stain easily. I hope I can find a wood one, too.
ReplyDeleteI have always wanted to get a john Boos cutting board but had to settle on one that was in our price range :) I love wood cutting boards and found one I just love at an outlet store a few years back. I clean mine with salt and lemon after cutting things like onions and it always comes out nice and clean smelling. Mine is very thick and sits on my counter all the time. Thanks for this post....I made the right decision to get the wood one. I still dream of a john boos one but then who doesn't :) :)
ReplyDeleteGood to know! I'll be sharing this bit of info, thanks!
ReplyDeleteI have two very large wooden cutting boards. I love them. One of them I had made specially by an Amish woodcrafter. It is so heavy, it takes both hands to lift it and move it. But it is so nice and convenient I use it every single day. I also have a small glass one (Polish Pottery) that I love for small jobs. No plastic ones in this house, lol!
ReplyDeleteInteresting. I generally use my plastic cutting board for cutting vegetables. I also use a plastic board for cutting meat, but it's not the same board that I use for cutting the vegetables. Currently, I only use my wooden cutting boards for baking.
ReplyDeleteI have 2 wooden ones I got from Walmart, but they have held up well. One is maple and marked for meat and poultry on one side & breads and pastry on the other. The other one is bamboo and I use it for fruits & veggies. They last much longer than plastic & look nicer too.
ReplyDeleteI seem to remember reading that some woods, and bamboo, have antibacterial properties while the plastic just gets tiny scratches that hold the bacteria in.
I hate plastic boards thank you for clearing that up..we have had wood boards for years ...I do own a plastic one but we only use it when we have more than one cook in the kitchen like my children...
ReplyDeleteI use both (have one of each), but definitely prefer the wooden boards. They do clean much better than the plastic ones.
