Simpler Times

Book Illustration of Mother and Daughter Reading by Jessie Willcox Smith

I have been thinking of simpler times.  When my children were younger, it seems like there was so much more time.

In the morning, I would wake them with a song.  I would sing to them from a little book that had good morning songs for the morning, and goodnight songs for bedtime.  I don't even know where that book is now!  The children loved it so much that they made a few pieces of it.  It needed badly to be repaired (or replaced).  The songs spoke of comfort, God's care, and also of thankfulness to the Lord.

After singing, we would all sit on the floor and read together.  For quite some time, I would read them Morning Bells in the morning, and Little Pillows at night time.  We would all huddle on the floor of a tiny bedroom, and the sunlight would stream in through the window to greet us.  Several of us still have the Bibles we marked up with highlighted verses from those precious little books.

At night time, before bed, I would read from the Little Pillows book.  And I would sing a sweet bedtime song to soothe their souls before sleep.  How I remember those days with fondness.  They seem like such Simpler Times.

There were no science experiments.  There were not hours and hours of school.  I was not teaching multiple children how to read.  The days were longer of fun and chores, but not so much rushing and hurrying.

Some times I long for those days, and wish I had kept more of a journal of our times together. We only have our fading memories now.

Dear Mothers, if you have young ones now, realize that this time is golden.  Precious golden hours are these times.  When the children are little, it really is so much simpler in many ways.  Before you know it, they will be grown, and you will wonder where the years went.  When the children get older, somehow there is a rush, rushing to always get to something.

Somehow through it all, we must slow down.  And remember.  For soon, these years too will be passed.

P.S.  I just remembered the name of the book I would sing from.  It is called Sing Me to Sleep/Wake Me with a Song.
